Yugaraj Indian Restaurant

After years of mediocre curries, I have finally unearthed a very good curry house in Paris – and it’s right on my doorstep! Yugaraj on Rue Dauphine on the Left Bank may not be the cheapest Indian restaurant in Paris, but you pay for quality, service and decent portions.

We were fortunate to get a table on a busy Friday night – even if it was by the window. The waiters are well dressed and incredibly polite – makes a change from the typical Parisian waiter service. Equally the menus, mango lassis and food all arrived promptly. It was only afterwards that it dawned on me that they were trying to get the table freed up as soon as possible as there was such a queue building up!

No complaints though, the food was fantastic. Often the Parisian curry houses serve up small balti dishes with just a few pieces of meat and a generic sauce with varying degrees of spiciness. Yugaraj was far better than this.

The quantities were generous. Plenty of chunks of meat in the Lamb Korma, very tasty, and fragrant. Only minor point, the meat was a touch dry. Nonetheless, creamy, rich and filling.

Taking the waiter’s suggestion on the Yuguraj Special Spicy Chicken, this was several large pieces of chicken on the bone in a garlicky spicy sauce. A bit too heavy on the slices of ginger but again absolutely fantastic.

We also took some sides of Aloo Gobi (cauliflower and potatoes), Peshwari Naan and Pilaf Rice.

Overall it was a very good meal and a great start to the weekend but perhaps still a bit on the expensive side: dinner for 2 with no starters or alcohol came to 80 Euros! However if you’re craving a good curry house in Paris and don’t mind forking out for a good meal, then head down to Yugaraj.
