Alfredo Positano

When someone tells you to try a place because it's "the best pizza in Paris" you're bound to have high expectations. We decided to give it a go one Sunday afternoon, just to see how good it was.

Alfredo Positano is well situated on Rue De Guisarde along with some other very good restaurants such as Eva Evane and Chez Fernand. This area of the Latin Quarter benefits from huge footfall but avoids being labelled as typical tourist traps that you might find in other parts of St Germain.

The first sight to greet you upon entry is a counter full of antipasti and seafood. Dishes upon dishes of fresh prawns, calamari, fish fillets, whole red snapper, and lobster. Along the top shelf, lightly roasted vegetables in olive oil and balsamic dressing. Nothing super-original but a sure bet to taste good.

We did try the recommended pizza but I have to say we were somewhat disappointed. Perhaps it was the hype and anticipation, perhaps it was our general lack of appetite after a slight bout of flu. Either way, a base that was not crispy just is not good enough. Surely the most basic element of a good pizza is a firm but moist base that crunches to the bite?

Where the pizza fell short, the pasta certainly made amends. The Laganelle Ai Funghi was really outstanding. The pasta was firm and well textured to capture the sauce so that every mouth-watering bite had to be savoured. Delicious mushrooms as well, giving it a rich creamy sauce.

Next time I will definitely go for the antipasti, and I regret not going for the fish. The table next to ours piled up the dishes in true Italian style with a beautiful looking dish of pan-tossed red snapper.

We finished off sharing some profiteroles. Very good, as you'd expect - you can't really go wrong with profiteroles. Rich chocolate and an irresitably creamy centre, and as you can see, my wife devoured most of them before I could even get my camera out! A well decorated restaurant and we'll be looking forward to trying someother dishes there although the pizza is certainly not the best in Paris.
