La Tete au Loup

A very good name for a very good restaurant. During our week-long stay in Normandy, we decided to venture out from our hotel a few times to try the local eateries. And we weren't disappointed.

La Tete Au Loup is a typical French auberge, with a warm welcome in peaceful surroundings, and caricature fat chef (never trust a skinny chef). The three-course Menu Terroir was good value at 29Euros. We started with a home-smoked plate of salmon which was fresh and delicious, and a small pot of snails cooked in a creamy garlic sauce. The latter was fantastic, the thick rich sauce perfect for dipping a warm crusty loaf of bread.

For the main course, my wife had a stuffed chicken breast braised in cider. The meat was moist and tender, and the sauce was excellent.

I had a simple cod fillet grilled with a butter sauce. Sounds bland but was very well made.

For desserts, we shared a creme brulee with a hint of calvados (a local spirit made from apples) and a nougat ice cream served with raspberry coulis. While the creme brulee was pretty standard, the nougat ice cream was outstanding and a refreshing way to end the meal.

A highly recommended restaurant if you ever happen to pass through the area.
